Preview of the Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle United match
Newcastle United's 16-year spell in the Premier League came to an end as Damien Duff's own goal doomed them to a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.Duff deflected a 38th-minute shot from stand-in skipper Gareth Barry past his own goalkeeper Steve Harper to seal their fate.
It meant Magpies legend Alan Shearer had failed to work the miracle he was brought in to try and achieve with eight matches remaining.Newcastle have paid the price for a season of instability ever since Kevin Keegan decided to quit as manager in early September and Mike Ashley decided to put the club up for sale.
Joe Kinnear was brought in to try and rescue the situation until his heart problems terminated his involvement and led to Shearer getting the call. But it was always going to be an uphill task to reverse a season of under-achievement and turmoil in such a short space of time. Now Shearer has to decide whether he wants to take on the task of trying to help the Magpies regain their top flight status and is due to have talks with Ashley early next week.
The decisive goal came after Nicky Butt conceded a corner, appearing to indicate Harper had not given him a call. The danger appeared to have been averted when Taylor headed out Ashley Young's centre - but Stiliyan Petrov headed the ball back to Barry, whose fierce shot struck Duff and completely wrong-footed Harper before finding the corner of the net.
Agbonlahor nearly doubled Villa's lead when his flick from John Carew's centre flew just wide of the far post - but Martins almost levelled in injury-time when he headed wide from Butt's free-kick.Villa began the second half on the attack and Harper was forced to fingertip away an inswinging and powerfully driven corner from Young at full stretch.
Young took advantage of the Newcastle defence backing off to line up a shot from 20 yards out but he curled his effort past the post.Harper was relieved when Milner dragged his low shot wide when unmarked 20 yards out as the Newcastle defence were prised open with ease.Newcastle fans chanted "attack, attack, attack" but there was little evidence of their side threatening the Villa goal.
Shearer brought on leading scorer Michael Owen - who has been struggling with a groin injury - in place of Kevin Nolan after 66 minutes. But Carew should have sealed Newcastle's fate when he miskicked with the goal at his mercy from an Agbonlahor centre.David Edgar was sent off in injury-time for bringing down Ashley Young - his second bookable offence - and soon after the Magpies' fate was sealed.

News about the English premier league clubs
Stoke City defender Danny Pugh has vowed to establish himself in the first team next term
The 26-year-old former Manchester United youngster has struggled to hold down a place in Stoke's side, starting only 10 matches in the recently completed campaign.
He had been used at left-back in the final weeks of the season but was back on the bench for Sunday's last match - the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal - and only used as a second-half substitute.
That is progress on the start of the season, when he could not even get into the match-day squad at times, and he said: "I have two years left on my contract, I want to stay here and improve my career here.
"I wasn't playing at all earlier in the season and that wasn't nice but since Christmas things have picked up.
"Now over the summer I aim to keep myself fit and come back next season flying. I will be trying to get myself in the first team early on and really establish myself."
Chief executive Garry Cook says Manchester City will one day be able to challenge neighbours Manchester United.
United are looking to add a second consecutive Champions League crown to their three successive Barclays Premier League titles.
City, who finished 10th in the league, want to start closing the gap this summer and their Abu Dhabi owners are poised to fund a transfer spending spree.
Cook said: "People say our ambitions are too high but I don't see a problem with having the ambition to be the best in England and then Europe.
"It is about building a culture of success here - not one of survival.
"I want to be competing with United one day and I have no reason to think we won't be."
Cook is not expecting instant success but believes the club now have a solid base with manager Mark Hughes and is preparing for a busy summer.

News about the Arsenal after the 2009 EPL season
Arsene Wenger has reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal after being linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Wenger sparked speculation that he could be prepared to leave the Gunners this summer after admitting that working with the Spanish giants would be an "interesting project".
But the Frenchman has said there could be little doubt about his dedication to the Arsenal cause.
"I have shown my commitment always to this club, in good and in bad times and in the worst times, but I don't think that people can question my commitment," Wenger said.
Asked whether that meant he would still be at the Emirates Stadium next season, he added: "I do not have to repeat every week exactly the same thing."
Wenger said he still felt the club were on the up and even made a point of mocking Real's recent record in Europe.
"I believe we had recent disappointment but overall since eight months (ago) I'm very proud of the way the team has improved," he said.
"You speak about Real Madrid - they waste a lot of money and they have gone out in the last 16 of the Champions League for five consecutive years."
Arsenal's Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been linked with a move to AC Milan and Wenger admitted the situation was complicated.
Asked if he was confident Adebayor would stay, Wenger said: "Yes, but that depends as well. It's very difficult to go into any individual assessment with that.
"The only things I can say is that Adebayor is under contract and he's with Arsenal, and that's it."
Reports have suggested that the striker has become disillusioned after another trophyless campaign for the Gunners, but Wenger was keen to defend his team's development over the last few seasons.
"We are very sorry that we haven't won a trophy, but many clubs would be proud of the record we have in the last four years" he said.
"With such a young team, if you consider the value of the team, the quality of the team and the investment we have made in the last four years, we do not have to be ashamed of the quality of the football we have shown."That is the most frustrating thing - the club is going in the right direction and we have to be strong enough to continue to do that."

News about the Chelsea after the 2009 season
Guus Hiddink has warned Chelsea will need to increase the depth of their squad if they are to win the title
Sunday's 3-2 win at Sunderland cemented the Blues in third place in the Barclays Premier League and sent them into Saturday's FA Cup final with Everton on the back of a 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
They would also have been preparing for Wednesday's Champions League final had it not been for Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta's last-gasp semi-final equaliser at Stamford Bridge.
However, Hiddink, whose temporary reign will draw to a close at the weekend, believes they need to reinforce their squad if they are going to be able to compete on all fronts next season.
He said: "It's not up to me to talk about that, but the people at this club know they must improve in depth because we have a good squad and a good team, but everyone knows that Chelsea has to compete on three roads.
"You need a squad not just of 14 or 15 or 16 players, but you need quality players all over the place. But that's not up to me, that's up to the new manager and the board, of course."
Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink paid tribute to Manchester United's coolness under pressure.
United need just a point from Saturday's home match with Arsenal to hang on to the Barclays Premier League crown.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side held their nerve under pressure from Liverpool and Chelsea to stay at the summit and Hiddink says they should be congratulated for doing so.
"Every team in this tough league will experience some period of 'less performances', which is normal," said Hiddink. "In that period, the quality of United was not to panic, to stick to their jobs.

News about the top two clubs of the EPL
Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Manchester United to join the pantheon of all-time greats.
Victory over Barcelona would allow United to become the first side to win back-to-back European Cups since it was rebranded in 1992.
Liverpool and Nottingham Forest achieved the feat in the 1970s. Now it is the Red Devils' turn to prove their worth.
"There have been a lot of unlucky teams in world football but when you look at the pantheon of great teams you need to have won the European Cup to have that tag," said Ferguson.
"There is no question about that. It has always been that way. Teams like Manchester United and Barcelona have to win the trophy to be regarded in that respect."
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has admitted he needs to be "almost perfect" with his recruitment this summer
The Reds have narrowly missed out on top spot this season after pushing Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League title race.
Benitez hopes his men can finish above the Red Devils next term but accepts that he will have to bolster his squad during the transfer window.
The Spaniard also believes that he does not have as much money at his disposal as Sir Alex Ferguson and must therefore make sure he does not make any mistakes.
"If we spend big money on one player and he's not successful for us, it's worse for us that it is for United," Benitez said.
"If they make one or two mistakes, because of the difference in money between us, they can spend £40-50m on players.
"We know that we have to be almost perfect in everything we do."

News about the Bottom three clubs after the 2009 season
Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson says Gareth Southgate can take the club back into the top flight.
Gibson said: "We will not have a scapegoat at this football club; it will not be Gareth Southgate.
"He is a good man, an intelligent man capable of being a top, top manager. Gareth has convinced me he knows what it takes to get us back up.
"He is a man I know and admire and we will work together in getting this football club back into the Premier League. What we need is the support of the fans and the town, and let's work together to get the club back in the Premier League.
Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has apologised for the mistakes which led to the "catastrophe" of relegation.
e said in a statement on the club's official website: "Seeing Newcastle United relegated from the Premier League has been a catastrophe for us all.
"I fully accept that mistakes were made during this and previous seasons, and I am very sorry for that.
"I would like to say sorry to our magnificent supporters who have turned up in their thousands, home and away, up and down the country and who have given the team amazing backing throughout.
"And I would also say sorry to all of the club's hard-working staff, who have gone about their jobs all year long.
Tony Mowbray concedes his West Bromwich Albion side have not won enough matches this season. And Mowbray said: "We have not won enough and we are where we are because the league table does not lie.
"Good players win you matches. That was evident from Liverpool. I have got to continue building, keep going, improve it bit by bit.
"Good players are not easy to come by. We are in a market where we can only afford young players and inexperienced players. We just have to give them time to develop."

Preview of the Chelsea vs Blackburn Rovers match
Guus Hiddink finished his last match in charge at Stamford Bridge with a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers - and left to the sound of Chelsea fans calling for him to stay on as head coach. However, the impassioned pleas for the club to sign up the experienced Dutchman on a permanent basis were more in faint hope than genuine expectation.
Indeed, Chairman Bruce Buck suggested in the matchday programme that a decision on a permanent successor was expected "sooner rather than later" - with AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said to be the top target as he contemplates his own future after missing out on the Serie A title to city rivals Inter.
Nevertheless, the way in which Chelsea - who won with a goal in each half from Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka - have performed under the guidance of the Russia boss is a credit to their professionalism as much as Hiddink's tactics and man-management skills. It is perhaps fitting that the final farewell for the Dutchman is to come in the FA Cup final on 30th May, when the Blues faithful will get to say their goodbyes at Wembley.
Anelka escaped down the right, before whipping the ball back onto the penalty spot, where Malouda arrived on cue to crash a bullet header past Paul Robinson, into the corner. After 10 minutes, Anelka almost made it 2-0 when he touched Ashley Cole's cutback goalwards, but Robinson produced a fine reaction save. Chelsea continued to push forward and Givet, from under his own crossbar, was alert to hack away Malouda's chip over the goalkeeper. The French striker needed no second invitation, and drilled in his 18th league goal of the season, to draw level with United forward Cristiano Ronaldo - as chants of "Guus Hiddink, we want you to stay" rang out around Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea wins that match with the 2-0 score.

Preview of the Manchester united vs Arsenal match.
Manchester united leads the English premier league with 86 points. This week they have the match against the Arsenal. Currently Arsenal has the 3rd position with the 66 points. Arsenal has the win against the Manchester united in first match in EPL. In that match Nasri score twice and Arsenal wins 2-1.
First half
Arsenal starts the match and tries to get the early breakthrough. Their strikers put the good pressure on Manchester united defense but united break all the efforts of the Arsenal strikers. as time wore on, it seemed Ferguson's side were adopting a pragmatic approach to the situation, ensuring their goal was tight and secure, pushing forward in numbers only when really necessary. Manchester united played in that match with counter attack strategy. First half finish with the 0-0 score. While the first half ended with United still on course for the 11th league title of Sir Alex Ferguson's illustrious reign, Arsenal had every reason to be pleased with themselves.
second half
In second half Manchester united try to get the maximum ball possession and find the opening for their first goal. Ronaldo had an even better opportunity at the start of the second period after Tevez had failed to manage a shot after Carrick had supplied the cross, but did enough to nudge it into the Portugal superstar's path. There was no need for him to do that in such a position. We were lucky to keep it down to three, how many times did they hit the bar? I was disappointed with the manner of the goals. The first was offside and the second and third were from set-pieces. If you give players things to do at set-pieces and they do not pick up their man, it is very disappointing."

Preview of the Aston Villa vs Hull City match on Mon 04, May, 2009
Hull city who need a win desperately to stay in English Premier League for the next season. They have the match against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Aston villa who has the 5th position on English Premier League points table.
John Carew's first-half goal clinched an automatic European spot for Aston Villa for the first time in 11 years and piled on more misery for relegation-threatened Hull City at Villa Park. The Norwegian international struck his 14th goal of the campaign 11 minutes before the interval to secure Villa's first victory in 13 matches. The three points moved them back into fifth spot and above Everton but more significantly they are now assured of participating in the revamped Europa League next season. It represents more progress for Villa under Martin O'Neill despite the disappointment of seeing hopes of competing in the Champions League disappear after their recent lean run.
Hull remain embroiled in the battle to survive in the top fight and they have collected only two points from their last seven matches although they are still three ahead of 18th-placed Newcastle United. Villa were worthy of their first home league success since mid-January despite not firing on all cylinders.
After the match Hull City manager says,
"The players gave a lot to try and get back in the game. It was a poor goal from our point of view. We had good possession on the edge of their area but gave it away cheaply. I don't think their goal was offside although sometimes you get those decisions. It was good play from Villa and poor defending from us. Now we have to take the commitment from this match into the next game at home to stoke which we feel is winnable."
